In the city centre a car mostly moves at low revs. The compressor is engaged, but because the car is moving slowly the condenser (the AC radiator behind the front grille) does not get enough airflow. Add Adana's hot, humid air to this and the system runs constantly to meet the cooling load. The result is compressor wear, a loss of condenser efficiency and faults that arrive sooner. An auto AC's cooling depends on the pressure and amount of refrigerant gas circulating in a closed loop. As the gas that slowly seeps out through connection points decreases over the years, cooling weakens. Depending on your model, two types of gas are used: R134a in older and mid-age cars, and R1234yf in many newer cars roughly after 2017. The two cannot be substituted for one another; the wrong gas causes serious damage to the system. Before refilling we fully evacuate the existing gas with a vacuum, check for leaks, and then charge the exact amount specified by the manufacturer, together with compressor oil, using a precision scale device.
The compressor is the heart of the AC and keeps the system running by compressing the gas. The long running hours in Seyhan can cause wear in the compressor clutch (magnetic clutch) and bearings. A metallic noise from the AC or cooling that suddenly cuts out is often compressor-related. The condenser, being right at the front of the car, is directly exposed to stones, insects and Adana's dust; its fins get clogged or crushed. A bad smell from the AC almost always comes down to the same cause: moisture building up on the evaporator combines with dust and creates a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. If the AC stops cooling again shortly after a refill, there is usually a leak in the system. A leak is hard to spot by eye; that is why we introduce a special dye (UV tracer) or nitrogen pressure into the system to pinpoint where it is seeping from the o-rings, unions or condenser. Some AC faults are not mechanical but electrical: the pressure sensor, AC relay, fan motor or the compressor control line. In a sound system the gas can last for years; there is no fixed interval. If you notice the cooling has visibly weakened, the gas may have dropped or a leak may have formed. In that case we recommend checking for a leak first rather than simply topping up the gas.
The AC label under the bonnet shows the gas type (R134a or R1234yf) and the amount. If the label is unreadable we determine it from the model and year; we always run this check to avoid charging the wrong gas.
