The most important thing Captiva owners should know is that the timing chain on the 2.2 VCDi diesel stretches over time (chain stretch). When the chain loses tension you get a rattle, loss of traction and the risk of the chain jumping; if neglected this can turn into severe engine damage. That is why on a diesel Captiva we inspect the chain, tensioner and gear set as a whole, and on noisy or vibrating cars we perform under-bonnet listening and a diagnostic timing check.
Another important item is the emission system. Carbon build-up on the EGR valve and the swirl flaps in the intake manifold causes power loss, black smoke and a warning light. The DPF particulate filter, especially in short city trips, clogs and cannot complete regeneration. Using our diagnostic tool we read the soot percentage and apply a forced regeneration, and when needed cleaning or flap/EGR service. The turbo actuator and manifold pressure sensor are also parts we check often on a diesel Captiva.
On an AWD Captiva, failing to change the rear-axle coupling fluid and rear differential oil on time can cause strain in corners and vibration. We check the AWD system's fluid service and rear differential condition.
