The common engines in the Aveo are the 1.2 (B12) and 1.4 (F14D) petrol units, and these run on a timing belt. Failing to change the belt on time risks valve-piston contact in these compact-block engines, so we renew the belt, tensioner and, when needed, the water pump as a set. Aveo owners most often complain of hard cold starting, misfire and dropping idle; the cause is usually the ignition coil (coil pack), spark plugs and plug leads. Caught early, it is resolved with a low-cost repair.
Other classic items include thermostat and water pump leaks, radiator fan sensor faults and a dirty idle control motor. EGR valve carbon build-up can also cause idle instability and an engine light. In stop-and-go city traffic the clutch system wears the most. A stiff clutch pedal, slipping on take-off or a burnt smell indicate the pressure plate and release bearing are due for replacement. If you hear a clunk in the steering, feel road shocks or see uneven tyre wear, we recommend a front-end check.
